By Steve BousquetPosted Nov 05, 2017 07:06:47More than two-thirds of all full-time jobs in Australia are in the hospitality industry, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
In addition, more than a third of all workers in the private sector are covered by a private pension plan.
For some of those who are not covered by their own pension, the public system provides an avenue to get a job.
For example, a hospitality worker who is eligible for a federal paid parental leave scheme can apply to work as a waitress for the federal government.
The employer, however, must provide an alternative plan to cover the worker’s pension, including a work-from-home arrangement.AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan says the federal Government has been “on the right track” in providing the benefits for workers.
“We know the benefits are good for workers and we’re confident that this will be part of the package,” he said.
“There’s always a risk of a government-led scheme taking longer than others.”AFL chief executive Gillon “Catherine” McLachlin said it was the federal Labor Government’s approach to supporting families with childcare costs that was the “most effective”.
“Our goal has always been that we have childcare that is affordable and accessible,” she said.
The Government has committed to providing $20 billion over three years to support families with carers, including the National Child Care Rebate.
The Federal Government will also fund childcare support for young people aged up to 17 with their parents and grandparents, and the Youth Allowance Scheme will be expanded to include young people from families on Working Income Supplement.AAP/ABC
